One of the necessities of caring for a dermatitis prone skin is moisture; a home remedy for eczema includes alternative moisturizers. Dry skin can result to irritation, scratching, more soreness and the cycle goes on. Studies have shown that a well moisturized skin lessens the chances of using steroids as topical cure by 50%. This means that a well moisturized skin can prevent an outbreak or buffer it to lessen inflammation. Emollients are over the counter treatments for dermatitis; these have the purpose of keeping the moisture locked on the surface of the epidermis; increases the ability of the skin to hold water; and lubricates it to prevent friction when scratching. One problem with emollients is most are 40% to 50% mineral oil or petrolatum, a by-product of drilling crude oil. Another option from emollients as a home remedy for eczema are natural plant derived oils and essential oils. These oils can be single moisturizing solutions or can be mixed with more potent oils with anti-inflammatory and other healing qualities. Some of these are coconut, olive, flax seed oils and shea butter. These can serve as vehicles for more potent oils that have positive effects against dermatitis.
