Today, it is also available in lotions and ointments lessening the sedation effect. But just as steroids, prolonged usage of these medications is not advisable due to adverse effects ranging from motor impairment, irregular heartbeat and breathing, abnormal sensitivity to light, short term memory loss and urinary retention. The sedation effect also fades over time as the body adjusts to the drug intake.
So there are a few tried and true options for reducing the irritation of the symptoms but none of these over the counter eczema treatment options go to work on the root problem or cause.
